Reclaiming Your Garage Space for Fall Part 2

As we sell garage cabinets and other storage, we are likely to be the first ones to tell you to buy garage cabinets for your holiday lights, right? Not so fast! We want you to reclaim your garage space. Reclaiming means having what you need when you need it. So, having the right types of garage storage will give you options that make sense based on the things you own.

Overhead storage

For example, holiday items should probably be stored in overhead racks, because they don’t need to be on hand at any given time, strictly during the holidays. We have several different types of overhead storage units, and they’re all fantastic. Overhead racks, for example, can be comprised of 4x4, 2x8, or 4x8 foot sections.

Overhead racks are for things you occasionally need, like pool toys and luggage. Also, after you store your Christmas trinkets in the overhead racks, you’ll never wonder where they are, how they got smashed by someone crashing their bike in July, and you’ll stop having those ‘ADD TO CART’ moments!

Speaking of that bike, we have hooks as a means of storing that bike to get it off the ground.

Cabinets

Save the cabinets for possessions you need on a more frequent basis. Those are things you need to have handy on a daily, weekly, or periodic basis. Examples are tools, household equipment, and sport, or hobby supplies. If you wonder about things that should not be stored in the garage, we will discuss that in a future blog.

No ambivalence

Cabinets and overhead storage should not be used as a means to hide things you no longer want. There is a reason people ascribe to the notion that you should only keep what you love. While we can’t vouch for that notion, we can tell you that you can’t keep a souvenir or artifact to commemorate every waking moment of your life since birth. Some judicious pruning of things you no longer want, use, or wear can save your organizational space for things that hold meaning or at least practical value.

This is a common and popular overhead rack configuration.

By faithfully grouping ‘like’ things according to the frequency in which they’re needed, they will be naturally easy to locate. Many advocates of garage cleaning advocate taking everything out of the garage in the process of cleaning it. This practice surely allows for the organization of items as they’re added back into the garage, so it’s worth considering. But, if you have another effective means of organizing, we also believe that everyone should use a method that is practical for their situation.

Regardless of the solution you choose to implement, please be careful to avoid putting your hands anywhere you can’t see, as sometimes our southwestern critters such as scorpions decide to hide in the family garage.
