From focusing on hitting 10,000 steps per day, getting that promotion, and resolving to bring more meaning to our relationships, we are driven to make the new year a good one. But, one space (a rather large one) that we forget to focus on is our home, and one step further, the garage. Not only is the garage used more often than the front door as the main entry-way in 55% of households (source), it’s also a super simple and often a fun space to use for weekend projects, storage. Some people even use it as an extra office. So why do we keep procrastinating on making it a workable space? This is the year!

We’ve created two simple New Year’s resolutions that you can easily stick to this year that will add value and security to your home and make your life easier. We promise you can keep them.

I VOW TO MAKE MY GARAGE MORE SECURE

It’s no surprise that nearly one in ten break-ins happen through the garage door. It should also be no surprise that this is often alleviated (or solved) by some simple security measures being followed. What better time than a new decade to better secure your home and valuables? A great place to start is the garage.

  • Set up a few security cameras.
  • Keep the opener secure at all times.
  • Lock the garage cabinets that contain poisons or valuable

I RESOLVE TO GET ORGANIZED

Half the battle is the plan. Here’s an easy garage plan of action that you can take on this weekend.

  • Toss the trash. Not just the old boxes and cartons you don’t need because you already have overhead storage, but also the old sofa you’ve been keeping because the dog likes it, and the flotation devices you have for a boat you sold in 2015.
  • Donate the items you’ve already designated as giveaways. One of the toughest things about donating items is the three steps from your donation pile to the trunk of your car. Just do it!
  • Arrange the items you want to keep in high-quality storage cabinets and shelves. If it’s worthy of space, it’s worth keeping clean and organized with like-items.

A secure garage with organized possessions is a doable resolution! If you decide this is a plan you’d like to implement for the new decade, and you don’t have enough storage to execute it, why not give us a call? We can set you up with gorgeous, practical garage cabinets that will make the job easy.

Happy New Year, everyone! We hope this is your best decade ever!
