Organizing Your Garage for Fall

Early fall is an excellent time for optimizing garage space. The summer heat is gone, and the cold winter days are still several months away, which means it's a perfect time to work in that enclosed space.

But if home organization isn't your forte, the task of re-arranging a garage could be a bit daunting. Here are a few tips that might help.

Clear out all the junk first

If it's been a minute since the last time the garage was cleaned, chucking out all the junk lying around should be the first step. If any broken items are beyond repair, this is the time to toss them out. And if there are old cardboard boxes that are falling apart, they ought to find their way to the trash, too.

Let go of unneeded stuff

The garage is a great place to put the things in the hope that they'll be of use someday. You don't consider these items junk, and it's not easy to let them let go.

That's why selling an old, but still working, appliance online, or donating it to someone in need, could be a smart way to go. The same applies to sentimental value items, like children's old toys that could use a new home.

Categorize all the items

Once the junk is thrown away and the stuff to donate is moved out of the way, putting the rest of the items in other categories can be immensely helpful.

Place the holiday decorations in one pile, the car-related products in another, and garden tools in the third--that's the general idea. Doing this will offer a better overview of what needs to be managed. And it can help determine what the next step should be.

Figure out the layout

One of the critical steps in organizing the garage for the fall is determining the layout. Heading into winter means prioritizing the garage space accordingly.

Find a special place in the garage for winter-related car equipment, as well as holiday decorations, and the kids' toys. Because we live in an area that doesn't see snowfall, our winter equipment needs are different from those of many other regions of the country.

Select the storage bins and cabinets

When organizing a garage, a trip to the container store might be necessary. There are other options, too, such as hiring a professional to install custom-made cabinets.

Or the solution could be just getting several plastic bins that could store all the things in your garage. Also, consider installing hooks on the garage walls to keep cables and other lightweight items and invest in overhead storage.

Create a foul line

A great way to prevent bikes, garden tools, and car bumpers from getting damaged from the descending garage door is to create a "foul line."

With the garage door closed, use masking tape, and right along the inside edge, create a line. And while other family members still might leave their stuff lying on or near the foul line, at least they'll know when it's too near the door.

Get the garage ready for any season

Organizing the garage for fall might seem like a big chore, but it's possible to make it fun. And after the job is finished, the results are probably going to be striking. A well-organized space makes finding things easier, which is a big bonus when the holidays arrive.
